Talent is only Skin-deep?

Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Sam Hui... at the mention of these names, the first thing most people think of is how wonderfully talented they were when it came to singing. Songs first, appearance second. Isn’t that how it should be?

But when some of today’s artists are mentioned, people think first of their pretty faces and how often they see them in TV commercials and in magazines, and then, may be, they think about the songs they have sung. Is that what the industry has turned into?

To a degree, I understand why: in the old days, we had just the radio through which to listen to music; then came the record player. Sure, there was the TV, but it wasn’t for listening to music with. Moreover, something happened in the 1980s that changed everything: MTV. Now, it is not enough to listen to a song- we have to see the singers at the same time. Who wants to look at an ugly singer singing his or her hit, no matter how good is it?

However, I dislike this current trend of choosing a pretty face and grooming it into being a singer. Music companies are only concerned about their bottom line – they aren’t interested in touching people’s hearts with meaningful lyrics. They will use whatever method they can to sell more records. There is something seriously wrong with that concept, and I don’t approve of it at all.
